At the "Joint Innovation Lab - Organic Electronics", which was inaugurated on 11 September 2006, experts from BASF are pursuing research together with their cooperation partners from industrial companies, prestigious universities and research institutes from Germany and abroad. The researchers at JIL are currently focusing on the areas organic light emitting diodes and organic photovoltaics.

Organic light emitting diodes:

OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) are flat, thin, luminous construction elements made from organic, semi-conductive materials. As light tiles they offer a completely new range of options in lighting technology, such as windows as transparent light sources or credit-card sized flashlights. Researchers have calculated that, on present performance, OLEDs probably consume less than half as much electricity than conventional energy-saving lamps. BASF is researching and developing the active organic materials for OLEDs. The research objective is to optimize the emission characteristics of OLEDs, enhance their efficiency and prolong their service life.

Organic photovoltaics:

In the field of organic photovoltaics, the employees of JIL are working on solar cells based on organic semiconductive materials. Organic molecules are to replace the silicon in solar cells and make them more efficient and cost effective in the long term. The ultimate objective is to develop organic solar cells that convert at least ten percent of the incident light into energy and offer a service life of more than ten years. The success of the research activities depends to a great extent on the organic materials and it is precisely these materials that are the focus of research by the JIL employees.
