BASF products help to protect the climate

BASF is actively committed to climate protection and plays a pioneering role in this field. Thanks to our products, technologies and system solutions, our customers and end consumers are already saving energy and generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions in many areas of life.

3:1 for More Climate Protection

BASF is the world's first company to present a comprehensive carbon balance for its operations. The results show: Thanks to our products, technologies and system solutions, our customers and end consumers can save three times more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire amount caused by the production and disposal of the company's products in many areas of life.

The carbon balance shows for the first time not only emissions from BASF's production, but also takes into account emissions from raw materials and precursors as well as the disposal of all products. In addition, the company has looked at the product lifecycle of 90 key products that save CO2 emissions when used in end products. An independent third party, the Öko-Insitut in Freiburg, has reviewed and confirmed BASF's calculations.

Construction and housing

Many of our products such as phase change materials or materials used to manufacture innovative thermal insulating foams are used for energy-efficient construction. The volume of insulating materials we sell annually saves more than five times the amount of greenhouse gases emitted by BASF every year.

Mobility

Our products in the area of mobility help to reduce CO2 emissions. Examples include plastics that make vehicles lighter and additives that improve fuel consumption. Reducing a vehicle's weight by 10% can lower fuel consumption by about 5%, and our additives cut consumption by a further 2%.

Energy

We promote the development of new technologies and materials for the use of alternative energy sources. Topics under investigation by our researchers include organic solar cells, fuel cells, innovative hydrogen storage materials and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Health and nutrition

Our nitrification inhibitors ensure that ammonium nitrogen contained in fertilizers is not directly metabolized by bacteria in the soil. As a result, less fertilizer can be used to produce the same crop yields, which reduces emissions by more than 400,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent per year. This equals the carbon dioxide emission from 200,000 cars.
