Awards for BASF's Sustainability communication (Dec 2007)

In December 2007 BASF's sustainability communication has been awarded twice for its quality. The consultancy Jungle Rating has ranked the sustainability website of BASF highest among 53 companies that are listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. The rating highlighted quality, accountability as well as the up-to-date information. Multimedia features like videos provide an easy access for the user to complex topics of sustainability.

The Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IÖW) has ranked the sustainability reports of the 150 biggest German companies. BASF has been ranked as best chemical company and achieved the third position. In particular the reporting of social issues was well recognized. Lothar Meinzer, head of BASF's Sustainability Center received the award in Berlin.

BASF China - 2007 Best Corporate Citizenship Award (Dec 2007)




Best Corporate Citizenship Award ceremony
BASF Greater China received the laureate of "2007 Best Corporate Citizenship Award" , given by the 21st Century Business Herald, one of the top business media in China, for the third consecutive year since 2005. A total of 30 domestic and foreign companies got the award for their outstanding achievements and performances in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the largest scale since its inception.

In the past three years, the concept and practice of CSR has experienced a fundamental transformation from a few foreign forerunners to a business and social norm to evaluate and to recognize foreign investors in China. This year, with more competitors and stricter selection criteria BASF Greater China got the award again with highest ranking among all the awardees. This is a public and authoritative recognition to the tremendous efforts of all employees over the past year to live up to commitment of sustainable development.

On top of the basic requirements in the six categories which are defined by the Chang Jiang MBA School, Boston Consulting and Ogilvy PR Group including Corporate Governance and Ethic Value, Employee Relationship, Environment Protection, Social Welfare, Supply Chain Management and Consumer Rights Protection, the focus of this year is on "From Green to Gold", evaluating the ability of an enterprise in turning CSR into competitive edges.

The competition between international and domestic firms demonstrates the ongoing trend and the increasing quality of business activities regarding sustainable development in China.

Garrigues Award 2007 for BASF Española (Nov 2007)

BASF Española has received the Garrigues Award 2007 for the category environment.

The Garrigues Awards for the Environment are the most important prizes in environment in Spain. For this awards BASF Española presented the "Strategy of Environmental Promotion and Communication" and was awarded in the "Environmental Education and Communication" category.

"Sustainability is part of BASF strategy and refers not only to how we assume our responsibility with our main stakeholders - shareholders, customers and employees - but also with the environment and society in general", words pronounced by Karl-Peter Bercio, Chief Executive Officer BASF Española, after receiving the prize from Cristina Narbona, Environment Minister of the Spanish Government. The 10th Garrigues Awards ceremony took place at November 22 in Madrid.

CEAFI Award for BASF's sustainable investments in China (Nov 2007)

BASF China was named "2006 Outstanding Foreign Direct Investment Company in implementing CSR". The award was given by the China Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment (CAEFI), with strong involvement and support by the Ministry of Commerce.

BASF was shortlisted for the top 50 foreign-invested companies, among 600 applicants in China. Due to BASF's outstanding economic returns with adherence to Chinese laws and regulations, its labor contract system and harmonious employment relationship, its focus on environmental protection, its responsibility to costumers, and its contribution to public welfare industry it could win the award.

It is the first year that the 20-year-old CAEFI included the CSR award in its annual awards, signifying that the government has made corporate social responsibility a norm to evaluate and recognize foreign investors, an encouraging move for BASF to continue its leading role in pushing forward sustainable development in China.

On the same occasion, also BASF-YPC Company Limited (BYC), the joint venture between BASF and Sinopec, got the annual award for Outstanding Foreign Direct Investment Enterprise. It is a further award of excellence for BASF group.

#1 position in manager magazin's Good Company Ranking (Jan 07)

BASF Aktiengesellschaft has received recognition for its corporate social responsibility. The chemical company achieved the number one position in the Good Company Ranking presented by the German business magazine manager magazine, audit company Deloitte and consultancy Kirchhoff Consult at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday, January 25, 2007. The award honors well-managed, profitable companies that have succeeded in combining a coherent human relations policy with forward-looking environmental and social commitment. According to this ranking, BASF is among the most socially responsible companies in Europe.

BASF received the Federation of German Industry (BDI) Award for the Environment (Jun 06)

In the category "Technology transfer to Developing Countries", BASF received the award for a partnership project with the UN organizations UNEP and UNIDO to extend the use of the eco-efficiency in African textile dyeing companies BASF contributed its eco-efficiency know-how and long experience with textile products. UNIDO and UNEP have extensive experience with cooperative projects and are networked with the local companies. As a result, small and medium-sized enterprises in Africa can use the software developed by BASF - the eco-efficiency manager - to analyze their work processes and products to identify areas for economic and ecological improvement.

BASF nominated for EU Commission's Environmental Award (Apr 06)

BASF was nominated for the most prestigious environmental award that a European company can receive, namely the EU Commission's "European Business Award for the Environment". Of 139 projects submitted from 23 countries, 12 were selected for the final round. "BASF is one of the twelve best companies in Europe with respect to sustainability," noted the organizers in their letter of congratulations to BASF. BASF was nominated for its partnership project with the UN organizations UNEP and UNIDO to extend eco-efficiency analyses to developing and newly developed countries. This project will teach textile dyeing companies in these countries how to make their dyeing processes more environmentally friendly while saving money at the same time.

BASF receives award for family-friendly policy in Germany (Sep 2005)

BASF Aktiengesellschaft in Ludwigshafen has been awarded the 'Beruf & Familie' ('career & family') basic audit certificate by the non-profit Hertie Foundation. The foundation evaluates measures to implement a family-friendly personnel policy. Examples at BASF include flexible working hours, the daycare center 'LuKids' and summer vacation programs for employees' children. However, BASF's existing program is not the sole criterion. BASF will document its goal attainment progress in yearly reports to the Hertie Foundation. After successful re-auditing in three years, the company will then receive the final European work and family audit certificate.

BASF: Best corporate reporting of the year (Sep 2005)



BASF has been commended for its 2004 corporate reporting. It took top place for "Best Annual Report 2005" in this year's ranking performed by business magazine Manager-Magazin. BASF's reports obtained 80 of 100 points and were judged to be "very good." More than 200 annual reports were evaluated in terms of content, appearance and language.

According to the independent jury, BASF's top ranking was due in particular to the high transparency and efficiency of its reporting. "Despite the complexity of its business, the Ludwigshafen company has succeeded in presenting information succinctly without denying readers important details," said Manager-Magazin.

BASF honored with Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for UV-curable primer (Jun 2005)



The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded its coveted Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award to BASF's Automotive Refinish Coatings business for the company's eco-efficient UV-curable primer.

An Eco-efficiency analysis showed that the new primer from BASF cures 10 times faster than conventional thermally cured products. Since UV-curing is light-activated and does not rely on heat, it eliminates the need for bake ovens. As a result the energy consumption in a body shop is reduced by approximately 80 percent.

BASF receives German Environmental Reporting Award (Apr 2005)

The German Chamber of Public Accountants has honored BASF with the German Environmental Reporting Award (DURA) for its Corporate Report 2003. The first prize for the best sustainability report was awarded in April 2005 in Berlin. In 2002, BASF already won this award for its Corporate Report 2001.

The decisive factor for the judges was BASF's groundbreaking report covering the three dimensions of sustainability - economy, the environment and social responsibility. BASF succeeded in covering all the relevant topics in these three fields without losing sight of the essential subject.
