BASF 2015 is the name of the newly refined strategy of the world’s leading chemical company. One of the key elements of this strategy is sustainability. At the company's 'Good Practice Live!' event held at its Ludwigshafen site on May 10, BASF showed journalists how it integrates sustainable development into its everyday activities. The event was jointly hosted by BASF and econsense, the Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business.

The visitors were also shown around BASF's biotechnology laboratory, enabling them to see the many opportunities biotechnology offers for the long-term improvement of products and production processes. Chemistry's contribution to reducing energy consumption in homes was also on display: BASF's insulating foam Neopor®, for example, lowered the heating costs of an old, 100square-meter apartment in Ludwigshafen from around EUR 700 to EUR 100 annually. Carbon dioxide emissions fell by more than 70 percent.

"Examples such as these show that sustainable development brings us environmental and economic success", stated BASF's Dr. Utz Tillmann, Senior Vice President, Corporate and Governmental Relations for Environmental Issues.

Enhancing the social dimension of sustainability
Alongside its activities in the environmental field, BASF is also committed to further developing the social aspect of sustainability. One example is its hands-on lab, 'H2O and Co', which introduces youngsters to the world of chemistry in an exciting way. BASF has now set up children's labs at other sites, for example in China and Japan.

'Good Practice Live!' is a new series of events organized by econsense and member companies aimed at using practical and concrete examples to address sustainability themes more frequently and to sensitize people more fully to them.
