01/06 |

BASF is among the ten companies considered to be Models in Social Responsibility by Exame magazine, the main business publication in Brazil. For the second year, BASF is the only chemical company in this selected group.
A total of 222 companies participated in the selection process, describing more than 1000 actions of Corporate Responsibility. The model companies were identified based on the analysis of a group of specialists. Among those were representatives of the Brazilian Ministry of Planning and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

BASF received the Award on November 30th, 2005. The jury specifically recognised the company's engagement in the following socio-economic projects:
In cooperation with GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) and local partners, BASF has initiated the ECO Space Foundation in São Bernardo do Campo. It hosts the first center for eco-efficiency in Latin America and focuses on the transfer of knowledge and technology in the field of Environmental Management to local companies and organizations.
Furthermore, an opinion survey among BASF's employees was conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute. The five elements considered included credibility, respect, impartiality, pride and friendliness. The underlying intention of this survey consisted in promoting a transparent and permanent dialogue between the company and its employees. Based on the results, a plan for corporate actions , including 30 activities, was developed.

The Seeds for Tomorrow Program is another example for BASF's engagement in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility. The initiative is coordinated and sponsored by BASF together with the municipality of Guaratinguetá and is part of the local elementary school curriculum. In 2005, 6,000 students - from first to fourth grade - participated in projects covering topics like "Water and Health", "Little Friends of Trash", "Me and the Animals", and "Living Forests".
The company has also developed the so-called Environmental Cost Optimization Tool (ECO T) which assists in protecting and preventing pollution as well as in decreasing the residual wastes generated in the production processes of BASF and its related companies. Thus, BASF aims at reducing the impact of its production operations on the environment. Furthermore, the reports generated by the tool allow the company to initiate activities of continuous improvement in its production processes.
